B.E is a four years course which is divided into eight semesters. The eligibility criteria as to the entry into a B.E. program are a 10+2 years of schooling or Diploma. Candidates have to pass the "Common Entrance Test" of the concerned state in which the desired engineering institute is located. Autonomous universities in India award BTech instead of B.E. Cost of the course will vary drastically depending on the university or colleges of your choice.
Mechanical engineers job profile is mostly to design tools and equipment for engineering and civil purposes. Most of the time these engineers work as a team to develop new and improved machines. As to pursue Mechanical engineering a candidate must have excellent aptitude in science and mathematics. Also he/she should be interested to explore and alter the machine parts. Mechanical engineers can start their career as assistants or senior engineers. This will ensure them with hands-on experience in the various projects. As experience is gained they can move on and become supervisors or managers. The career path will be decided on the performance of the individual and his caliber.

In order to pursue a course in mechanical engineering it is a must to have pursued PCM i.e. physics, chemistry and mathematics as subjects in 12th standard. This is a must. No college will take candidates who have not pursued these subjects. You can also pursue optional additional subjects like biology during 12th standard. No issues in that. There are various entrance exam conducted by various universities. You need to decide which college you would like to go to. Appear for the entrance exam for that college. The cost for admission varies from college to college. Government affiliated colleges will be cheaper.
There are many opportunities like automobile industry, shipping etc available for the candidates. Choose the career based on what your strengths and caliber. In case you have not chosen subjects physics, chemistry and mathematics in 12th you can go for courses like BSc in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics etc.

You have not mentioned about mathematics. Did you had mathematics in 10+2 ? For BE course the eligiblity is PCM in 10+2.
Mechanical engineering is a core branch of engineering and always has a lot of job opportunities. A mechanical engineer is never out of a good job.
The cost depends upon the reputation of the college and the fees decided by the technical university of the concerned state. It can be anywhere like 50,000-60,000/- tution fees only per year. So the total cost of your BE can be like 3 lac if you are pursuing it in your hometown only. If you are going to some other city cost will increase.

There are several other options like Bsc and BCA.

Mechanical Engineering is a ever green branch and It has got a huge scope too.In every other field there is requirement of a Mechnical Engineer.I must say you choice is good and better you go for it.Talking about the cost of doing it will depend upon Colleges to colleges.I would like to suggest to write the various entrance exams which are conducted at the National level,like AIEEE,IIT JEE ,State Engineeing exams,Private Institutions own Exams .and then go for the college selection,Yes its true that private institutions will charge you a bit high, But Some of them will place you too some where in good company.On an Average fees will be Around 20000Rs-30000Rs in Government college and It will vary amongs Private Institutions.

then you are are elligible to get admission in almost all colleges.
If you got Govt. College then you have to pay just 30,000 per Year.
You have a lot of chance to get Govt. Job
As well as Private Jobs.
