In order to get a job in railways, 12th class qualification is sufficient. But, this will be limited to junior level posts like loco pilot, apprentice, railway assistants, TTE etc. There is no specification on the subject area to be taken to get a job in railways. Graduation qualification in any subject will fetch you officer jobs in railways. If you wish to get in to engineering jobs in railways, a B.E/B.Tech qualification is necessary. Some of the job profiles you can opt after technical graduation are section engineer, division engineer, project engineer etc. The notification about job posts in railways will be published in RRB website. A written examination by RRB is necessary to be qualified for this. If you get through this exam, personal interview is the last level.

All types of engineering degree is accepted in railway department. Well some posts may need an electronics and communication engineer or some may need a mechanical engineer. But if you take an electronics and communication engineering you can get through many of the vacancies. Because ECE gives you an idea of all the branches. and the notifications of various posts will be published in the HINDU newspaper or in your local area newspaper, so keep a track in reading newspaper also.
