    UPSC Geologist Exam

    UPSC Geologist Exam is conducted is conducted by Union Public Service Commission every year. It is conducted to recruit Geologists in Central Government organization. This examination is conducted by the Ministry of Mines in the Gazette of India. It is usually conducted in the month of December.

    Geologist exam is conducted to recruit two categories. Category-1 is the posts in the Geological survey of India. This is for the position of Junior Geologists. The next category, Category-II is for positions in the Central Ground Water Board and Ministry of Water Resources. Here the positions recruited through this UPSC exam are junior hydrogeologists and assistant hydro geologists. They belong to scientist grade B.

    Structure and Pattern of UPSC Geologist Exam
    The examination contains two parts, written examination and interview for personality test. The subjects for written examination are;
    • General English (3 hours) – 100 marks
    • Geology Paper I (3 hours) – 200 marks
    • Geology Paper II (3 hours) – 200 marks
    • Geology Paper III (3 hours) – 200 marks
    • Hydrogeology (3 hours) – 200 marks
    The total marks for personality test is 200 marks. The candidates who want to get posts under Category I and Category II have to attend all the five subjects. Those who are competing for the posts under Category I have to attend subjects from 1 to 4 whereas those competing for the posts under Category II have to attend 1,2,3 & 5. All the questions will be in conventional essay type format.

    Qualification Criteria for UPSC Geologist Exam
    The candidates who have Master’s degree in Geology or Applied Geology or Marine Geology from a recognized University under UGC Act, 1956 can apply for the exam. Those who have either a diploma of Associateship in Applied Geology from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad or a Master’s degree in Mineral Exploration or Hydrogeology are eligible for this exam. Those candidates appearing for the final year examination can also apply for the course.

    Application Procedure for UPSC Geologist Exam
    The candidates who are applying offline are supposed to pay Rs.100 through a single Central Recruitment Fee Stamp. The candidates applying online have to pay Rs.50 by remitting money in any SBI branch by cash or through net banking facility. The candidates from abroad has to deposit the particular fee in the office of India’s High Commisioner, Ambassador or representative from abroad for credit to account head “051 – Public Service Commission-Examination Fees” and attach the receipt with the application. All female candidates and SC/ST candidates are exempted from paying the examination fee.

    Geologists' Examination



    (A) Tentative Schedule

    (i) Notification of Examination: June

    (ii) Conduct of Examination: November



    (B) Age - limits:


    21-32 years on 1st January of the year of examination.




    (C) Educational Qualification
    (i)

    Master's degree in Geology/Applied Geology or Marine Geology from a recognized university; or
    (ii)

    Diploma of Associateship in Applied Geology of Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad; or
    (iii)

    Master's degree in Mineral exploration from a recognized university (for posts in GSI); or
    (iv)

    Master's degree in Hydrogeology from a recgonized university (for posts in CGWB)

    Candidates appearing in the requisite qualification can also apply for the examination but are required to submit proof of passing along with detailed application form.



    (D) Scheme of Examination



    Part I

    Written Examination

    Candidates competing for both categories have to appear in the following papers
    (i) General English

    100 Marks
    (ii) Geology Paper-I

    200 Marks
    (iii) Geology Paper-II 200 Marks
    (iv) Geology Paper-III 200 Marks
    (v) Hydrogeology 200 Marks

    Part II : Interview for Personality Test 200 Marks
