    UPSC Geologist Exam

    Union Public Service Commission conducts the geologist exam each year for the selection of Geologists, Hydro geologist and Assistant hydro geologists. The exam is conducted by UPSC usually in the month of December. The recruitment of the candidates is based on the written test and interview. The exam is a highly competitive one because large number of candidates apply for the same as it gives them the chance to get high posts in Central Government Organizations under the control of Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Water resources.

    Structure and Pattern of UPSC Geologist Exam

    The recruitment of the candidates is on the basis of their score in the written test and personal interview. The written test will be in essay type format and consists of five papers. The time duration for each paper is three hours. The topics for the written tests are given below.
    • General English – 100 marks
    • Geology Paper 1 – 200 marks
    • Geology Paper 2 – 200 marks
    • Geology Paper 3 – 200 marks
    • Hydrogeology – 200 marks
    Those who clear the written test have to attend for a personal interview. The personal interview carries 200 marks. The candidates who apply for the post of geologist need not attempt the Hydrogeology paper. The candidates who apply for the Hydro geologist post will have to attend all the papers except the Geology paper 3.

    Qualification Criteria for UPSC Geologist Exam

    The candidates who have a Master’s Degree in any of the following subjects from any recognized University can apply for the examination.
    • Geology
    • Applied Geology
    • Marine Geology
    • Mineral Exploration
    • Hydrogeology
    Associate ship in Applied Geology, Diploma holders from Indian School of Mines can also apply for the exam. The age limit of the candidates must be between 21 and 35.

    Application Procedure of UPSC Geologist Exam

    The candidates can submit the online application form through the link http://www.upsconline.nic.in and by paying the online fee of Rs.50/- through the credit card or direct cash payment in any SBI Branch. The applicants can buy the form directly from the head post offices specified in the exam notification. The exam fee of Rs.100/- will be paid through Central recruitment fee stamp. Female and SC/ST candidates are exempted from fee payment.

    Geologists' Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to the posts of Geologist (Junior), Group 'A' and Assistant Geologist Grade-I, Group 'B' in the Geological Survey of India and Jr Hydro-geologist (Scientist 'B') Group 'A' in the Central Ground Water Board.

    Age - limits:
    21-32 years on 1st January of the year of examination.

    Educational Qualification

    (i)Master's degree in Geology/Applied Geology or Marine Geology from a recognized university; or

    (ii)Diploma of Associateship in Applied Geology of Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad; or

    (iii)Master's degree in Mineral exploration from a recognized university (for posts in GSI); or

    (iv)Master's degree in Hydrogeology from a recgonized university (for posts in CGWB)
