hi...its very important to choose an good subject which is your strong point to clear and get an good rank in the civil services examination ,generally the trend is to choose such subjects which have syllabus common with the general science paper because that decreases the work load of preperartion and also the syllabus to prepare and also the time factor comes in ,so it would be better to go for subjects like geography which is considered the most safest subject for the civil services examination and also public administartion is an good and safe choice ,i am attaching you last years notifictaion to get an idea of the all the subjects available

Re: Which subject should I choose as a Optional in Civil Services examination if I'm from B.Tech CSE Background and Interested in Mathematics?

    Hi,

First of all you said that you are interested in mathematics then you can choose this subject as your optional subject in Civils. You should your optional subject in which you have depth and which is related to your stream of study as you are interested in Mathematics then obviously you can go for it.

First you need to appear in Civil service Preliminary Examination. After clearing the prelims you will be able to appear in mains. So you need to prepare for both.
But first preference must be given to the preliminaries then after you will get time to prepare for the mains but that time is not sufficient for the mains so you need to complete some part of the mains before itself.

The optionals in Civil service examination are:

There are so many good books in market. For optional subject you should study the the books which you have already studied in your academics.Your academic text books are best. How ever you will get questions from basic part of the subject. So you must have a very good knowledge of the subject to clear the Civils.

One more important thing is that you need to go through the English News Paper regularly. And also there are some career related magazines in the market which demand that they provide good suggestion and questions regarding Civils.
