Re: Qualifications for becoming a Customs Officer

You need to decide whether you would like to work for the State level or the National level. For the State level you will need to appear for the SPSC exam. In case you would like to work as an officer of the customs and central excise services or as a senior superintendents then you will need to appear for the UPSC exam which is conducted at the National Level. Incase you miss the cut off's by a few marks then you will need to join in as an Appraiser. For appearing for these exams you need to first of all complete your graduation. Candidates with any area of specialisation can apply. Also you need to be at least 21 years of age. You are allowed four attempts. Also it is a must that you should not have any case pending in the court of law against you. You will also need to undergo a physical fitness test.

UPSC conducts an entrance test for the recruitment of Customs Officers. It consists of two stages - the preliminary test and mains. You need to clear the written test and the personal interview. Then only you can expect employment as Customs Officer. The qualification criterion to apply for the test is a graduation in any disciplines. In addition, you should satisfy the physical standards of fitness. Those who are involved in any civil related issues like criminal record, drugs will be considered ineligible for the test. If you satisfy all the eligibility requisites, then you can attend the test. Notification for the test will be published in prime employment dailies.
