Once you complete your engineering you will be eligible to join the merchant navy stream. For that you will have to first appear for the entrance exam conducted by the various institutes like IIT, IGNOU - OPENNET exam, Joint Entrance Exam etc. There are many institutes offering courses like MERI institute which offers courses in both Mumbai and Kolkata, LBS insitute in Mumbai, Chanakya Institute in Navi Mumbai. Since you have already completed engineering you will be required to undergo a 1 year course. Only once you complete this course will you be eligible for joining the shipping firms. You will need to approach various shipping companies for job based on the qualification. There are both Indian and foreign shipping companies. The institutes will be able to guide you on this.

All Indian citizens are eligible to enter Merchant Navy either as an officer or a similar level if they have the basic qualification. They can focus in mainly two fields, Marine Engineering and Nautical. As to become a seafarer, there are certain Pre-Sea courses. These courses are available to Indian citizens in different Government and private institutions. These institutions need to be approved by the Director General of Shipping, only then the courses are valid. A mechanical engineering student may get some exception in waiving off some course requirements. Some offer courses designed especially for Graduates from Mechanical Engineering stream. There are mainly four training institutes offering these courses. T.S. Chanakya, Navi Mumbai, MERI, Kolkata and Mumbai. Lal Bahadur Shastri College of advanced Maritime Studies and Research.

Well being a Mechanical Engineer opportunity is there for you in Merchant Navy.

You can join Merchant Navy in 'Engine Department' but for that you have complete at least 10 months or 12 months of Pre - Sea training in Marine Engineering. For engineers who are not from Marine engineering but from Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics and Communication Pre-Sea training are also offered by recruiting company itself. However, if not you can complete your training from some good and DGS (Directorate General of Shipping). Since, the course is costly therefore some recruiting shipping companies offer that course to recruiting candidates itself.

after completion of training you will be absorbed or recruited by any shipping company and will be able to join Engine Department of ships, cruise, sea vessels as a Fifth Engineer or Fourth Engineer or Trainee Engineer.

Salary may be anything between 20,000 - 40,000 for above posts.

Also one negative factor is that you wont be able to reach the the highest designation of engineer department 'Chief Engineer' because that post holder must be a Marine Engineering degree holder.

NOTE: Pre - Sea Training for Mechanical engineers is also known as 'Graduate Mechanical Engineers course' thats because apart from sea training training in MArine Engineering is also provided. So don't be confused.

To get into navy or military you must write NDA entrance exam.

If you get good rank in that you can choose navy and can become a big offficer in that.

you can complete the B.tech you can applicable for the indian Navy post.

But you have to qualify the CDS exam :

CDS stands for the Combined Defence Service. CDS exam conducted by the upsc twice in year.

That is CDS-I and CDS-II.

CDS exam has three wings

Indian Military Academy.

Navy

Indian air force


Eligibility criteria of indian navy:

the applicant should be citizen of india.

The applicant should completed graduation from a recognized university.

The B.tech BE candidates are also available this exam.

The final year B.tech students are also available this exam.

Your age should be between 19 to 23 years.

Only unmarried male candidates are eligible this exam.
