Basically to pursue a PH.d in any course you need to have a masters degree. For a PH.d in economics it is advisable that you have a Masters in the same field. It will help you in having the basic knowledge for pursuing PH.d. You need to first select an institute from where you want to pursue the course. Then check out the eligibility criteria and other areas which you need to fulfill to secure admission. You can either secure admission for M.Phil and thereafter on completion pursue a PH.d or the other option is to go directly for PH.d. The admission and eligibility criteria vary from institute to institute. In some institutes there will be an interview along with the written.

As to be eligible for a Ph.D degree the candidate must have a Masters degree in the relevant field with at least 55%of marks. The qualifying degree must be from a recognized university. Candidates with prior experience in teaching, industry, administration and professional experience at senior level will have added advantage while applying for Ph.D programs. There are mainly two ways by which one can join the Ph.D. Program in Economics. 1st one of through the M.Phil, PhD route and another is the Direct PhD route. The admission rules and eligibility will differ in each of the programs. The admission for direct PhD is based on a thorough assessment of the research proposal put forward by the applicant. This will be followed by an interview. For further details please visit the official website of the university which you have indented to join.
