AS you are asking for optional subject .
so it ishould be Subject which you studied in Your Graduation.
And among those graduation paper in which paper you have more intrest you can choose that as your optional subject.
Because you should have good command in your optional subject.

Re: Which optional subject to be selected in IAS Entrance?

    Dear your question is incomplete...........!

You haven't mentioned either your qualification or else, so that we can advice you accordingly.

However, opt for the only subject in which you have good command, the subject which would be easy for your preparation. In depth knowledge with strong basics are required to tackle the paper. Which can be gained only if you are good in that subject. Don't listen to anyone that this would be better or that use your mind, yeah feel free to take suggestions but final decision would be yours.

However, point that should be kept in mind while selecting for optionals:-
    • Subject combination like this is not allowed in UPSC

    Any two branches of engineering
    Combination if two Literatures
Political Science/International relations and Pubilc Administration
    Commerce & Accountancy and Management
    Anthropopgy and Sociology

    ETC....

You have to select for uncommon subjects.

    • Don't select lengthy subjects which requires lot of time to complete.

Re: Which optional subject to be selected in IAS Entrance?

dear friend, you can select any subject which interests you the most and the subjects which you think you can do better.BUT I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU MY FRIEND THAT FROM 2011 THE IAS ENTRANCE PATTERN HAS BEEN CHANGED.NOW YOU NEED NOT TO OPT SUBJECTS IN THE PRELIMS OF IAS AS IT SHALL NOW CONSIST OF TWO COMPULSORY PAPERS
    1-GENERAL STUDIES
    2-CSAT i.e aptitude test
yes,but for mains you have to select 2 subjects of your choice.personally in my opinion.you can take polity, history, public administration, statistics, geography, economics etc.as it will help you to understand our system better
