To become custom officer, you have to clear Civil service exam conducted by UPSC.
After selection you can opt for one of these services:

    Indian P & T Accounts & Finance Service, Group ‘A’.
Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Group ‘A’.
Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise) Group 'A'
Indian Defence Accounts Service, Group ‘A’.
    Indian Revenue Service, Group ‘A’

But remember , its not so easy to get through CSE exam, only 900 students are selected among 5 L.

So, the key to success is to have good knowledge of current affairs & strong base in general science coupled to good writting skills.

Re: What are the requirements and eligibility criteria to become a customs officer?

You will need to appear for an entrance exam conducted by the UPSC. As part of it you will need to first clear the prelims, then there will be a final exam. You can select from the optional subjects given in the UPSC site. On clearing that you will need to appear for an interview. The main qualification required is that you will need to have a bachelors degree. There is no restriction on the area of specialisation during graduation. It is important that you be physically fit. There will be a test for the same. Also it is important that you should not be involved in any civil related issues like criminal record, drugs etc. A complete background check will be done.
