The Indian railways recruit mechanical engineers in two ways. Graduate engineers have to appear for Combined Engineering Services. The candidates with +2 are appointed through the Special Class Railway Apprentices examination. Mechanical engineers have 3 years of probationary period. The training during this period is given by Railway Staff College at Vadodra and Indian Railway Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers (IRIMEE) at Jabalpur in Bihar.
Mechanical engineers carry out the repair and maintenance of locomotives, wagons and carriages. They ensure that the locomotives, wagons and carriages are in proper order for day to day running..After working as apprentice for 3 years they are appointed as Assistant Mechanical Engineers. They get promotions as Assistant Executive Engineers, Executive Engineers, and Superintendent Engineers and so on.

Selection in Indian Railways is made based on the Combined Engineering Services' Examination which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission every year. Recruitment is made for four categories i.e Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. The exams are held once a year normally in month of June. The forms are generally available in February. The exams are held in Agartla, Ahmedabad, Aizwal, Aligarh, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bareilly, Bhopal, Kolkata (Calcutta), Chandigarh, Chennai, Cuttack, Dehradun, Delhi, Dharwar, Dispur (Guwahari), Gangtok, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itaganar, Jaipur, Jammu, Jorhat, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji (Goa), Patna, Portbolar, Raipur, Ranchi, Sambalpur, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvanandapuram, Tirupati, Udaipur and Vishakhapatnam. The age limit is minimum of 21 years and maximum of 30 years.
There is General Ability Test which consists of General English and General Studies. General Studies covers areas such as knowledge of current events, matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person, questions in History, Geography.

There will be also a test in the area of Mechanical Engineering. There will be both objective and theory questions. The areas to be included are thermodynamics, Heat transfer Fluid
The mechanical engineers are required to carry out task such as maintenance of Diesel Locomotives, rolling out stock of the railways, periodic overhauling of the engines and also make sure that the locomotives, wagons and carriages are in proper order for day to day running.

you can opt for indian engineering services. that is the best one where you can start your career as an elite class officer. Also you can apply for section officer . The number of seats for mechanical engg is also good and not so much competition as serious contestants are less. so prepare for indian engineering services

upsc is the civil service exam

the eligibility of UPSC exam is:

candidate should be indian citizen
age: 21 to 30 years
candidate should have minimum qualification of bechelor degree incorporated by central or state university.
Every candidate appearing at the Civil Services Examination, who is otherwise eligible, shall be permitted four attempts at the examination
Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Civil Services Examination
