To join the merchant navy first of all you need to have an degree in marine engineering or must have completed your pre-sea training. Thereafter you have the option to join either the Indian Shipping companies or join a foreign shipping company. By joining the Indian Shipping company you will mostly be required to travel near the Indian Continental. However there are some shipping companies which have requirements to travel to the western side. The foreign shipping companies do have there offices set up in the country, mostly in Mumbai. Foreign companies mostly offer better pay scales compared to Indian Shipping companies. Either ways you need to approach them with your qualifications. If found suitable they will have a contract with you. Some companies have contract for the period you will be sailing. You will need to renew your contract on rejoining. You need to collect the list of the companies and approach them directly.

Candidates need to have a +2 qualification in science as to join the Merchant Navy. This profession mostly involves the transportation of cargo and passengers by Sea. A merchant navy career is full of new adventure and travel. It is also rewarding at times. In India, the requirements of well trained naval officers are huge. Both public and private companies are looking forward towards excellent candidates. The remuneration of these officers is also really good. The starting salary can begin from Rs. 20000 to Rs 50000. In foreign ships an experience candidates will be paid around Rs.1,00,000. Most of the jobs are on contract basis for six to nine months.

Think twice before joining speciallly from engineering side..bcoz their is very little growth scope for them.As automation had totally slashed down the manpower required to run the ship.So doing training for merchant navy engineer will be completely wastage of time and money & while in rewards will get life long struggle for jobs.My suggesstion not to join merchant navy but if join then please opt Deck side officer only.

graduate student can apply for merchant navy

Merchant field is one of highest paying jobs ,Here after completing , your degree you will be placed in some Shipping company,Initially you will be given training for 1 year after that you will get a Tag(post) on your back and you will be permanant.Initial salary ranges from 150000-200000 lakhs per month.!!!

after 10th u are placed as deck cadet after a training....after 12th u can also go for deck cadet.........after bsc nautical science u are liable to get higher rank and can also be promoted till captain...after marine engineering u cant become captain...but are placed as some other rank but below captain

my good friend coming in merchant navy means coming in hell, Don't go on salary what a seaman's (Deck officer's, marine engineers or crew) get's they gets only after when they get experience, and my friend's there r none of the company which takes fresher. U will get experience when u will get job ,and there r no jobs for freshers in merchant navy believe me as am facing same problem. and there r lots of harassment of senior which u have to bare. my best advised for you all to never think of merchant navy its a worst career no respect full of headache
there is nothing about adventure here trust me if u will come here u will waste your life for nothing. i am a sailor

you have huge scope in merchant navy.merchant navy is non-combatant commercial fleet which deals with transporting cargo and occasionally,passengers,by sea.in merchant navy,you can work in three area ship,the deck,engine and saloon department.in the deck department,you can become captain,second officer,third officer,junior officer.in the engine department,you can become second engineer,third engineer,electrical officer,junior engineer.service department manages the kitchen,laundary and other service.
