No. It won't effect your career in anyway. Either wise, you can also opt for MBA.

GATE 2012 is an all India examination conducted by the IISc and seven IITs on behalf of Department of Higher Education, MHRD, Govt. of India..!

The websites of Different IIT's are:
    IISc Bengaluru
    gate.iisc.ernet.in
    IIT Bombay
    www.iitb.ac.in/gate
    IIT Delhi
    http://gate.iitd.ac.in/GATE
    IIT Guwahati
    www.iitg.ernet.in/gate
    IIT Kanpur
    www.iitk.ac.in/gate
    IIT Kharagpur
    gate.iitkgp.ac.in
    IIT Madras
    gate.iitm.ac.in
    IIT Roorkee
    www.iitr.ac.in/gate

There is nothing mentioned about number of attempts one can make in GATE exam. That is the best thing and there is no age limit too.

For example:If you are form computer science Engineering and you have got All India Rank (AIR) 99 and total number of students appeared for GATE in computer science Engineering are 59338 in 2010. Then your percentile would be calculated as :

    P = ((59338-99)/ 59338) X 100
    = (59239/59338) X 100
    = (0.9983) X 100
    = 99.83
    Then you have 99.83 percentile...!

    Top Marks in GATE 2012

The following Students from different streams got the Highest marks for the 1st Rank:
Computer Science and Engineering and IT (CS and IT) 94.33Marks
Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) 91.33marks
    Electrical Engineering (EE) 74Marks
    Mechanical Engineering (ME) 87.67Marks
    Civil Engineering (CE) 74.33Marks
    Instrumentation Engineering (IN) 62.67Marks
    Chemical Engineering (CH) 76.33Marks
    Biotechnology (BT) 79Marks

Basic Requirements for Getting into IITs for M.Tech:

B.Tech percentage must be above 60.
Must have a wonderful GATE Score or Good All India Rank, or Good percentile.

    hi dear,
no your career will not be affected at all.
IF u clear GATE with a good score and get admission in a good college
    like IITs, NITs, BITS, IIITS.

u should only concentrate on your gate prep , dont wory about anytthing.
Once u get in a good college , nothing will be asked about ur gap so much.

just do ur preparation at ur best.
wish u best of luck for ur preparation.

    thanx
