Re: How to start my self preparation for IAS exam? How to prepare for that without any coaching?

You did not mention your highest level of educational qualification. First check yourself whether you meet the eligibility criteria for IAS Exam or not and then start preparation for IAS Exam.

For IAS, one has to go through a civil services examination conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) every year.

Here is the selection procedure for IAS Exam.

-CSAT Exam (Civil Services Aptitude Test)
    -Civil Services Main Examination
    -Interview

Here is the eligibility criteria for civil services examination.

    Academic Qualification :
-One should have completed Graduation with any of the stream from a recognized university.
-Even the candidates who have appeared for final year of Graduation and waiting for the results can also appear for civil services examination.

    Age criteria :
-One should be in the age group of 21-30 years to be eligible for civil services examination.
-Relaxation is there in upper age limit upto 3 years for the candidates of OBC category
-Relaxation is there in upper age limit upto 5 years for the candidates of SC/ST category.

If you fulfill the eligibility criteria, you can appear for upcoming civil services examination which is going to be conducted on 20-05-2012.

Before starting preparation for civil services examination, choose the optional subjects in accordance with your previous level of academic qualification. Know the syllabus for these optional subjects and then work on finishing the syllabus.

In order to appear for Main examination, initially you must have to qualify in CSAT Exam. So, prepare General English, Aptitude and General Awareness in a better manner which are the focus of CSAT Exam in addition to the optional subjects.

My suggestion is to join in coaching institute for civil services exam as there is high competition for this exam.

Here is the official website of UPSC which conduct civil services examination.

    Hi,

Preparation for IAS Exam by self without any coaching.

In preliminary examination there are two papers.
    • General studies
    • Optional Subject

    Preparing for General Studies Paper
    • For this paper, it is very important to be updated in “current affairs” in all fields.
    • For History, Economy, politics etc, you must refer Class 11 and 12 books published by the NCERT.
    • For general knowledge and objective-type questions, refer to the book “General Knowledge Refresher by O.P. Khanna”

you must read as many you can “Competition Success Review” issues & go through them and try to pick as many facts as you can.
Also solve the previous years' General Studies Prelims and Model Papers published in them .

while studying for General Studies, read as many business and political magazines, newspapers etc. that you can. This has two advantages.
    • It will give you a good control over the English language.
    • It will keep you updated with the latest facts and current affairs along with your vocabulary and essay writing .

    For optional subject paper

If you have got your bachelor’s degree in a particular field, and you are confident about that field then choosing that subject as your optional subject would be a great idea as you are already familiar with that subject.

Another option is to select a subject like Geography or History if you can mug-up a lot of facts.
    • Get the latest syllabus for the IAS exam. Then, cover the topics of the syllabus while SIMULTANEOUSLY referring to the question papers and seeing the kind of questions that are asked on each topic.
    • a good understanding of all the concepts of the syllabus is a must!
    • Make sure you concentrate on the “General Studies” and optional paperEqually .
    • Don't over concentrate on any particular paper.Do both in the right proportion. It is easier to say than doing.

For the mains examination there are 9 papers :
1 Essay type Indian Language Paper (300 marks)
1 English Qualifying Paper (300 marks)
1 General Essay type paper (200 marks)
2 General Studies papers (300 marks each)
4 Optional subjects papers (300 marks each)

For the "mains exam" you have to select 2 optional subjects & for each of these optional subjects, you have to give 2 papers. So that makes 4 optional subject papers overall.
so you have nothing to do new here already told above.Prepare yourself accordingly .

    Good Luck!!
