Indian Police service (IPS) is one of the top class goverment civil
services of India along with other services like the :-

    IAS (Indian Administrative Service),
    IFS (Indian Foreign Service),
    IRS (Indian Revenue Service)
and other Grade A and Grade B services.

For all these services a combined examination is conducted by the
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India. The examination is
known as Civil services examination. The examination is conducted
every year. The ealier pattern of Civil services was a Preliminary
examination followed by a Mains examination and finally the interview.

From this year onwards the pattern of the examination has changed.
The first stage of the examination i.e; the preliminary examination
has been replaced by the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT).Hence
the examination will be a three stage exam as:-

-The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)
    -The Mains
    -The Interview.

The CSAT is a objective type examination which will test your skills
in two sections broadly. It will basically test your analytical and
interpretation abilities rather then ability to memorize.

The CSAT will have two papers each of two hours of duration and
each of 200 marks. The questions will be Multiple choice objective
questions which will also attract negative marking for wrong choice.

The syllabus will be as followsx :-

    Paper 1-

This paper is included from this year onwards only. It will test your
skills in various sections such as Decision making, Quantitative
aptitude, logical reasoning, analytical skills, mental ability, data
interpretation. This paper can be compared to various management entrance
examinations like CAT, MAT, XAT etc.

    Ppaer 2 -

This paper will test your knowledge on current affairs, Indian history,
Events of Indian freedom struggle, Indian Politics and governance, Indian
civics, Constitution, Indian and world Geography etc.

So the first stage of the Civil services exam need a good preparation.
A good preparation of 1 year is atleast required to crack this exam.
You should refer the past 5 or 10 years of question papers of this exam.
For papaer 1 you can refer various books on Logical and Verbal reasoning
by RS Agrawaal and Tata Macgraw hills.

For paper 2 you should refer General studies Manual by Tata Macgraw hills.
It's a compleate book and covers various topics mentioned above. You can
also refer Manorma year book for thorough knowledge of current affairs.
You shall also go through various NCERT books.
