Well, since you are hard working person just start your preparetion from now.

Appearing for Civil Service Exams is not ther thing that matters cracking it with flying colours is what is needed to get into TOP options that are IAS, IFS and IPS.

And for Civil service preparetion the best way is to go through a good Coaching Institute, there you will find hand on guidance of whole matter.

Well, being a Commerce student opting for "Commerce" or "Economics" as an optional for Mains is a best option.

Re: How many times a person can attempt for IAS entrance exam? What are the important dates of the exam?

IAS comes under Indian Civil Services Examination, which is conducted by UPSC (http://upsc.gov.in) once in a year and is famously known as CSE (Civil Services Examination).

Basically there is a two stage selection procedure which is totally 3 stages including sub stage.

    1) CSAT - Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT has been newly introduced in 2011 previously there was Preliminary - which is nothing but the old wine in a new bottle)
    2) Mains, which also includes 3) Interview.

Generally whenever we talk about Civil Services dates it means dates of CSAT, because CSAT open to all and rest of stages are open only for shortlisted and successful candidates.

Therefore CSAT 2011 Important dates were as follows:-
    • Date of Notification in Employment News and other leading daily locals: 19.02.2011
    • Last date for reciept of forms at UPSC, Delhi: 21.03.2011
    • Date of CSAT exam: 12.06.2011

So, depending upon the dates of 2011 and other previous dates we can consider last of January - Mid February as the notification period for UPSC CSE 2012.
