As part of this exam you will first need to clear the preliminary exam. For this exam you need to appear for two papers. First one will be in the general knowledge area. For this it is important that you update yourself with all the current affairs area. For the second paper you will need to choose from the list of optional subject. You can select based on the subjects you studied during graduation. On clearing this level you need to appear for the mains exam. There will be general knowledge paper in this level too. Also there will be a paper in English language and other on any other Indian language. After this you should prepare for the interview round.

IAS exam is held every year and is carried out every year by the UPSC. This exam has mainly 3 stages, which is the Preliminary, main and the interview. You will need to appear for two papers. One is the optional subject for 300 marks. Another is the general studies for 150 marks. Be prepared for a two hour duration paper. For the optional subject question will be asked from the degree level syllabus. You need to qualify in the prelims to be eligible to appear for the mains. The main exam will also have two optional subjects. One will be the General studies and the other will be essay type. Along with this you also need to prepare for a English and any other Indian language paper.

Over all you have to select two optionals.
    How to select optionals:

Yuor selection depends a lot on your optional.
Choose one optional which you have studied in your graduation.
Other one choose in which you are somewhat interested , so that you dont feel bored.
Besides, communication skills & writting skills are also important for essay writting & interview, so also prepare them well.

DEAR FRIEND,now you don't have to choose optional subject for the preliminary exams as the new pattern has been introduced i.e.CSAT from this year onwards,it comprises of 2 compulsory papers
    1-general studies
    2-CSAT i.e. civil services aptitude test(reasoning,comprehension,analytical reasoning,decision making,basic mathematics etc.)
but the syllabus for the mains is the same for which you will have to select 2 optional subjects, which will cover four papers of ias mains, two papers of each subject.all the best.

The preliminary exams have now been called as CSAT-
    Civil services aptitude test.
There are no optional subjects in CSAT. All the
    subjects are compulsary in CSAT.
In CSAT you will be asked about general studies,
    Comprehension, Interpersonal skills ,
    Logical reasoning and analytical ability,
Decision making and problem solving and numeracy.
In mains there is a provision to select two
optional subjects from the list of 24 subjects.

Re: How many optional subjects do we have to opt for IAS Exam, in preliminary & in mains?

As part of this exam you will first need to clear the preliminary exam. For this exam you need to appear for two papers. First one will be in the general knowledge area. For this it is important that you update yourself with all the current affairs area. For the second paper you will need to choose from the list of optional subject. You can select based on the subjects you studied during graduation. On clearing this level you need to appear for the mains exam. There will be general knowledge paper in this level too. Also there will be a paper in English language and other on any other Indian language. After this you should prepare for the interview round
