You are qualified to join Merchant Navy on the technical side since you are a Mechanical Engineer. Also you must have secured a minimum of 55% marks in graduation. You will need to undergo training for a period of one year. For this you need to write the entrance exams like the Joint Entrance Exam conducted by IIT, the OPENNET exam by IGNOU. On clearing the test you will need to undergo a physical fitness test. This is to ensure that you will be able handle the sea life. As part of the test you will also need to have clear vision of 6/6. Some of the top institutes conducting courses include MERI Institute, LBS in Mumbai, TS Chanakya. Make sure that you join a reputed institute. After the training you can select to join any shipping firm i.e. Indian or Foreign.

With a B.Tech in Mechanical engineering, you are qualified to apply in Merchant Navy on the technical branch. The basic eligibility as to appear in the test is to have more than 55% in the relevant degree. You will have to get qualify in the entrance exam. The candidates need to apply for entrance exams like JEE or OPENNET etc. On qualifying this candidates will have to clear the physical fitness test. In the physical fitness test height, weight, eye sight etc will be evaluated. If qualified in both these test candidates will be called in for a personnel interview. The candidates who get shortlisted will have to undergo training in any of the navy institution for one year. It is very important to do this course in any one of the reputed marine institutions as to get excellent placement.
