After completion of Diploma in mechanical engineering you can go for merchant navy through the 2 year course from a AICTE/UGC/DEC afflicted institute.

And also need to have the 6/6 vision in each eye and must have a good physique.
Your age is not more than 25 years.

Career in Merchant navy can be pursued either as an officer or rating in mainly 2 specialized fields.
-Marine engineering
-Nautical(Deck)

In Merchant navy there are two kinds of officers:

Deck/ Navigator officer:
He'll be charged the navigation of the ship. The command over the ship by the captain or the master of deck.

Engineering officers:
He'll be charged with the ship engineering purposes like the pumps, hydraulics, fuel systems etc.

Candidates those who are diploma Engineers can join Merchant Navy after a 12 monts pre-sea training as a "Deck Cadet" provided that they have completed there Diploma with at least 60% aggregate including all semester. OR they can also join as Apprentice Engineer Cadet.
