Psychology is an interesting field for many. There are various specialisations which you can choose from like Clinical, Industrial, Social, Educational etc. So first you need to pursue a graduation course in the field of Psychology. You can pursue the same after 12th standard. After completion of the three year course you need to decide whether you would like to go in for Masters course or go in for a job. It will be ideal if you pursue the Masters course too. It will increase your prospects of getting a good job. You have the option to join hospitals, educational institutes or even research field. If you are interested in the research field then it will be advisable to take a PH.d too. Teaching is also an option available.

Psychologists need not have a medical degree. But they have to study several years to specialise in various aspects of psychology. One can pursue Psychology at the plus two level, graduate, post graduate and doctorate level. There are specialisations in many fields of psychology such as social psychology, child psychology, occupational psychology, clinical psychology, educational psychology, experimental psychology, etc.

Psychologists teach, practice and do research or work in one of the many branches of applied psychology. They apply their knowledge and techniques to a wide range of endeavors, including human services, management, education, law and sports.

    Different psychological fields:

    Clinical psychology
A clinical psychologist renders a diagnostic and therapeutic service, often in association with medical, para-medical and other professionals, to patients/clients experiencing mental and/or emotional distress. In addition they act as psychological consultants in hospitals and to organisations.

    Counseling psychology
These psychologists work mainly with people experiencing everyday adjustment problems, in areas such as career counseling, marriage counseling and general guidance. They also assist people in the development of skills necessary in daily living.

    Educational psychology
Educational psychologists emphasize the enhancement of general adjustment and academic development of pre-school and school children. They assess children and provide consulting and counseling services to children, parents, teachers and principals.

    Industrial psychology
These psychologists study the organisation/ employee interface and subsequently apply psychological principles so as to maximize reciprocal satisfaction and productivity in the work environment.

    Research psychology
A research psychologist investigates various societal and human issues in order to generate psychological theories for the purpose of understanding and dealing effectively with these issues. Research psychologists are also concerned with evaluating the effectiveness of interventions.
