Higher studies in advanced physics after B.Tech

Is it possible to have a master's degree, leading to a phd in a very advanced chapter (like quantum mechanics) with a B-Tech degree in a different subject (say, comp science). Will I be able to at least qualify the entrance test ?

Usually you are allowed to do post graduation in your area of study and you cannot cross over to other areas at a post graduate level. So if you have done your engineering degree in computer science, you can only go for post graduation in computer science or other related areas of electronics and IT. If you are particular about going in for doing your higher studies in advanced physics topics like quantum mechanics, then it is advisable to go and do a Msc again in Physics, but please keep in mind that you may lose your another 2 years. Then after Msc you can go in for PhD in your chosen area. Another practical option would be to look at some area where you can link computer science and advanced physics when you do Mtech and PhD. There are software packages which are used in the study of quantum mechanics, cryogenics and so on. You could have higher studies in those areas.

Re: Higher studies in advanced physics after B.Tech

Candidates pursuing Ph.D. Program in Physics are required to have M.Sc. in Physics, M.E or M.Tech in allied discipline. PhD aspirants with M.Sc. in Mathematics, Physics, Optics and Photonics, Instrumentation and Electronics will be taken in at IIA institute. Graduates with a B.E. or B.Tech can apply in institutes like IISc, IISERís, IMSc, RRI, Pune IUCAA, NCRA, and SNBNCBS. Final year B.Sc. and first year M.Sc students in Physics, Astronomy, Electronics, and Mathematics could also present an application to be pre-selected for research scholarship at institutes like IUCAA, NCRA and TIFR. At IPR institute applicants must have a PG in Physics. Applicants with a graduate degree will be taken in for the integrated M.Sc. Ė Ph.D. program in Physics at IISER, HRI and SNBNCBS. At IMSc, B.Sc, B.E and B. Tech are considered for M.Sc. (Research) program in Physics and Theoretical CS, as part of an integrated Ph.D. program. At SNBNCBS, students with B.Sc. (Physics), B.E., B.Tech is considered for Post-B.Sc.-Ph.D. program.

    Here's the deal:
I just completed my B.E. degree in Electrical & Electronics.
    The questions & doubts:

    1) What are my chances at getting an admission in one of the prestigious Physics Institutes in India?
    2) Also, will i need to prepare the full course of B.Sc and M.Sc level physics?
    3) If yes, how much time would it take to study the syllabus? And, is it possible at all?

    Dear friend,

you have just completed your b-tech degree so you have lots of higher study scope

M-TECH :- you must be cleared the GATE exam.
MBA:- you must be cleared the CAT or MAT exam.
    MS:- only b-tech course
    JRF:- only b-tech course
    PHD:- with valid GATE score.

    all the best

i have just completed my B.Tech in IT.is it possible for me to go for higher studies related to physics?because i have an interest for physics(mainly in space etc..) n i really like it...or is it a foolishness to go for physics after IT?if possible, then which course i have to go for and what will be the duration for that, which institutes/universities provide it?and how to proceed, means which competitive exam i have to crack?and is it possible to choose a path in between IT and physics...?because at many places in physics use of IT is required.like a software is used for study of quantum mechanics etc...m in a big confusion...please let me know all this..thanks
