UPSC ( Union Public Service Commission ) conducts the recruitment exam for the young Engineers to work under the government sector in various departments through the IES ( Indian Engineering Services ) Examination every year.

The recruitment is based upon the written exam followed by the Interview and if you have completed your Bachelor Degree in Engineering in any of the streams then you will be eligible for the UPSC IES exam.

1. Mechanical Engineering
2. Electrical Engineering
3. Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
4. Civil Engineering.

As you said that you are a ECE graduate and after you are selected in the IES exam you can be placed in the sectors like

- Indian Railway of Signal Engineers
- Indian Railway Stores service
- Indian Armament service
- Indian Ordinance Factories service
- Assistant Executive Engineer ( in Defense )
- Survey of India service
- Assistant Naval Store Officer
- Engineer in Wireless Planning and Coordination wing / Monitoring organization.

If you want to go for the written exam then the examination pattern will consists of 2 sections, all the examination papers will be in English only and consists of 2 papers each

Section I : objective type questions - Objective part consists of questions based on the General Test of English and General Knowledge.

Section II : essay type questions - In this part you have to choose the subject from the given four streams.

So to apply for the UPSC IES examination you must have to meet certain criteria so that you will be eligible to sit in the written examination.

Education :

- you must have completed Engineering in the above stream mentioned with a minimum percentage of marks from any recognized college.

- you must have passed Section A and Section B exams conducted by the Institution of Engineers.

- Passed Graduate membership examination of Aeronautical Society of India / Electronics and Radio Engineers.

Age :

you must have minimum 21 years and maximum 30 years and there will be an age relaxation for the Government servants for the categories mentioned in the official notification.

Eligibility Criteria foe IES :-


Candidate must be citizen of Indian or Subject of Bhutan or Subject of Nepal . Age limits for this examination is that candidate should have a minimum 21 years and maximum 30 years as on 1st august of the year of examination ( i.e according to this year notification candidate age born not earlier than 2nd January , 1982 and not later than 1st January , 1991 are eligible to apply ) .

Upper age limits is also applicable for IES examination , 5 years for SC/ST , 3 years for OBC candidates , 5 years for Ex-Servicemen.

Candidate must have a basic qualification is completed engineering degree from any reputed Institution and there is no basic percentage required . Those who are appearing in the final semster of degree course or pass out candidates or awaiting in the exam results may also eligible to apply for IES Examination .

Engineering Service Examination is conducted for recruitment of Civil , Mech , Electrical , Electronics and Telecommunication .

--> Since you belong to ECE you must apply for IES in the category of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering.
--> The basic eligibility criteria for IES is that you must have completed your graduation from a recognized university.
--> Even final year graduates can also apply for IES but they must make sure that if selected they must be able to submit all the documents at the time of joining.
--> The age limits for this examination is between 21 years to 30 years as on 1st august of the year of examination.
--> As per Govt.rules age relaxation is provided for 5 years for candidates belonging to Ex-Servicemen and SC/ST category (35 years).
--> Similarly age relaxation is for 3 years for candidates belonging to OBC category (33 years).

--> The notification will be published in the month of February and applicants must be applying by the end of march which is before the last date, with the exam being conducted in the month of June.
