    Defination
One shortcoming of Fourier series today known as the Gibbs phenomenon was first observed by H. Wilbraham in 1848 and then analyzed in detail by Josiah W. Gibbs (1839-1903). We will start with an example

GIBBS PHENOMENON IS ALSO CALLED AS RINGING ARTIFACTS WHICH EXPLAINS THE PECULIAR MANNER IN WHICH A periodic function BEHAVES AT A JUMP DISCONTINUITY .....WHICH STATES THAT the nth partial sum of fourier series has large oscillations near jump which might cause maximum of the partial sum above the function itself ....this overshoot does not die out as the frequency increases but approaches a finite limit....
the gibbs phenomenon is first noticed by HENRY WILBRAHAM. LATER ALBERT MICHELSON....THIS GIBBS PHENOMENON HELPED A LOT TO OUR SCIENTIST LATER TO FIND OUT MORE INTRESTING THINGS .....

IN FIR FILTER DESIGN BY FOURIER SERIES METHOD OR RECTANGULAR WINDOW METHOD ,THE INFINITE DURATION IMPULSE RESPONSE IS TRUNCATED TO FINITE DURATION IMPULSE RESPONSE.
THIS ABRUPT TRUNCATION OF IMPULSE RESPONSE V INTRODUCES OSCILLATIONS IN THE PASSBAND AND STOPBAND.
THIS EFFECT IS KNOWN AS GIBBS PHENOMENON

    Re: Explain about Gibbs Phenomenon.

    Friend,

The Gibbs phenomenon is the peculiar manner in which the Fourier series of a piecewise continuously differentiable periodic function behaves at a jump discontinuity: the nth partial sum of the Fourier series has large oscillations near the jump, which might increase the maximum of the partial sum above that of the function itself.

Gibbs Phenomenon Discovered by J. Willard Gibbs.
