There are quite a few opportunities in the railways for mechanical engineers. You will need to appear for the entrance exams. Once such exam is Combined Engineering Service Examination which you need to clear. There are various sections like the Services Stores section, Engineers section which accept the scores of this test. On clearing this test you will be posted in any of the sections in the railways. There is also an entrance exam which is conducted by the UPSC. Under this you will need to appear for the three parts to qualify for post in railways. The first part is the prelims, the second the main part and finally the interview.

As a student of Mechanical engineering there are many technical jobs in railways which you can apply. The technical section of Railway requires candidates from mechanical, civil, ETC and telecommunication and other professions. Most of the railway recruitment is done by means of the Combined Engineering Service Examination. Some of the divisions which take up candidates through CESE are Indian Railway services of Engineers, Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers and Indian Railway Services Stores. The candidates qualified in the entrance exam are taken into various posts in the government departments. A candidate can also appear the Indian civil service examination carried out by the UPSC. This test has three stages which all the candidates have to pass in order to enter in to this field. They are the preliminary test, main test and the personal interview. yes definatley you can try for it but if you get selected then you need to have an bachelors degree to join.Dont worry about result just give a try and next time you can go for it.
you can even try the IES exam,kpsc exams that have much larger scope and easy to score too.If you get selected then you willl get a good job.
you can even try for the GATE exam for foing the mtech.
