Indira Gandhi National Open University introduced the Certificate in Primary Education course with the following objectives:

• For development of understanding and knowledge of the curriculum to be followed in primary schools
• For development of skills in transacting the prescribed curriculum effectively
• For acquainting the participants of the programme about the different factors affecting the development of child, learning and motivation process, individual differences in classroom, etc…
• For appreciating the role of teacher in the political and socio-cultural context of the nation in general and in primary education system in particular and for development of a sense of commitment in teachers towards educating children

Eligibility for applying to certificate course in Primary Education:

The course extends to a period of six months and the maximum duration permitted by IGNOU for completion of this course is two years. For applying to this course, candidates must be in-service teachers either trained or un-trained or under training with matriculation/H.Sc/10+2 standard or about with a minimum teaching experience of five years at the elementary or primary level in a recognized school of the north-eastern state of India and Sikkim.

Subject offered in the Certificate in Primary Education course:

Certificate in Primary Education course includes the following seven papers:

• Teaching Language
• Teaching of Mathematics
• Teaching of Environmental Studies
• Understanding the primary school child
• School based activities
• Work-shop based activities
• Practice of teaching

Pattern of Teaching Language paper in Certificate course in Primary Education:

The code number of teaching language paper is CPE-1 and examination for this paper is conducted for maximum 70 marks. The question paper will have four questions and all questions are to be compulsorily answered by the candidates.
