    The examination of recruitment in Civil Services is a three tier system. The Civil Service Main examination is the middle level. Candidates declared successful by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) in CSAT (Civil Service Aptitude Test) examination are allowed to take this examination.

    Exam Pattern:

    This examination requires each of its candidates to appear for nine papers. There is a compulsory paper of this examination based on English as a subject. This paper is a qualifying paper; however it evaluates the candidate’s grip on English. Each candidate needs to qualify or pass in this paper to be successful in this exam.

    Syllabus of Compulsory English paper in Civil Service Main Examination:

    This paper encompasses the following attributes of English:-

    • Comprehension of given passages
    • Precise Writing
    • Usage and Vocabulary
    • Short Essays

    This paper needs answers to be written in English.

    Duration of Compulsory English paper in Civil Service Main Examination:

    This paper is of three hours duration and carries a maximum of 300 marks. Answers are to be written in descriptive form keeping in mind what the question has asked.

    Scoring pattern of Compulsory English paper in Civil Service Main Examination:

    Appropriate marks are given to complete answers. Special credit is given to the quality of writing and the fulfillment of the question in it. There is no scope of negative marking in this paper. The marks obtained in this paper are not taken into consideration when rankings are evaluated. However one has to qualify in this paper to successfully clear this whole examination.
