Merchant Navy (or Merchant Marine) refers to the merchant fleet of a country, which varies in capacity.

Career in Merchant Navy can be pursued either as an officer or a rating in mainly two specialized fields, i.e. Marine Engineering and Nautical (deck).
3 year degree course in Nautical Science for (10+2) students.
4 year degree course in Marine Engineering for (10+2) students.
2 year course for Diploma Holders.
1 year course for Graduate Mechanical Engineers.
3 month course for Deck Cadets for (10+2) students.

students who have completed their 12th with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) are eligible to join as Deck Cadets

Admission is open to both unmarried male and female candidates; age should not be more than 20 years

You can join Merchant Navy after completing 6th semester in degree. If you are mechanical engineering student you can apply for one year course. Courses in Merchant Navy for which you can apply are...Deck Cadets ,Marine Engineering,Nautical Science . But for taking admission you have fulfill certain eligibility criteria for that.

Eligibility criteria for Merchant Navy

• Students should have passed 10+2 examination from any recognized school or board.
• Students should have passed 10+2 examination with physics,chemistry and maths as subject combination.
• Student should have 6/6 eye sight .

If you are seeking admission to any government institution you have to clear Indian Maritime University exam .

Sorry my dear friend you are not eligible for merchant navy as you said
that you are studying in 6th semester .A candidate can apply after completing his graduation .
Second thing you haven't mention your branch .If you have mechanical ,electrical and marine
branch then you can apply in merchant navy . There are two sides in merchant through which
a candidate can join merchant navy . One side is deck side and other is engine side .
If you want to come from deck side then you should have bechalor degree in B.Sc nautical science .
You can join merchant navy after completing B.Sc nautical science .
if you want to come from engine side then you should have B.Tech in marine engineerin or
in mechanical engineering . There are various institute which offers these courses

Merchant navy is a field that deals with the import, export, management and shipping of the industrial goods through water ways and naval shippings.
You can get jobs in the Merchant Navy in the two areas:
Marine Engineering, and
Nautical Deck.

You can mainly join the merchant navy after your graduation as an officer.
There is a one year diploma course in marine engineering provided by many institutes across India for the graduates in machenical or other stream of engineering. You can apply for this diploma.

However if you want to be a sea farer, then join any of the pre sea course or rating the institutes provides like engine rating,saloon rating, deck rating etc..

There are two options available to join this stream. One is to join after 12th Science and the other after Marine Engineering. However even candidates with Mechanical Engineering background can join in for this stream. But first they need to appear for the entrance test like those conducted by T.S Chankaya and various other institutes. On clearing the test they will called for the interview . interview are many types.They will also need to clear the physical fitness test. After that they will need to undergo training for 3-4 months. This will vary depending on the institute the candidate joins. Also the fees will vary. You can appear for these exam when you are in the final semester.
