Normally most institutes prefer candidates who are from the similar background. Always go for a course only if you are sure that you would like doing it. Changing streams is always difficult. The rules in most universities do not allow candidates to change their stream. It depends from university to university. You need to approach the university concerned and ask for the same. You will need to appear for the entrance exams if eligible. For that you will also need to have knowledge related to the civil engineering. Find out the syllabus for the same and prepare accordingly. You can solve past years papers and check out how you fare.

M.Tech (Structure Engineering) is a 2 year PG course. This is a popular specialisation area for civil engineering students as this deals with the construction of most complex structures like huge towers and bridges. Most of the engineering colleges in India offer this course. BE/B.Tech in Civil Engineering is the basic criterion for the course. Candidates from other field may not be eligible for the course. The admission to M.Tech (Structure Engineering is through exams like AIEEE, GATE and so on. Different institutes accept scores of different exams while admissing students to this post graduate program. In India there are many colleges offering M.Tech (Structure Engineering like IIT’s, VIT, M.S Ramaiah Institute of Technology and so on.

You have done graduation in mechanical and now you want to do pg in civil engineering,so i would like to inform you that there is no college who will give you admission in other specialization for pg.The basi rule is that a candidate who want to pursue masters degree should pursue in that specialization in which a candidate had done graduation.Mechanical and civil engineering can be thought as just opposite to each other. The only option which is best for you that you must pursue m.tech in civil engineering. If you however changed also your stream then you are going to suffer very much.

    dear candidate
after complete b.tech with mechanical you have eligible for m.tech.

you have take admission through gate score or other option as per as college norms.
and you have eligible for m.tec with structure because you have also studied in b.tech about structure in strength of material, and theory of machine etc
