Now a day’s dentists in India earn a bachelor in Dental Surgery which requires four year of hard work and one year internship. The degree is validated by the Dental Council of India. The Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) requires 3 years of study after BDS. A BDS holder has much option available other than perusing MDS.

The fist option which is mostly preferred is the Private practice. Then there is the teaching profession, jobs in pharmaceutical companies, research projects, PhD, MBA (Hospital administration) etc. If a candidate is interested in IAS or IPS he/she can always go for it.

MDS and clinical practice are two options that most people opt for after BDS. You could think of a teaching profession. There are courses like M sc Dental materials, M sc Geriatric dentistry, etc. Another option is MBA. You could think of specialising in hospital management. Colleges like TISS, FMS, Symbiosis, etc offer courses. Yet another option is research. There are many pharmaceutical companies and other R & D organizations that do a lot of research.

hello,if you dont want to go for M.D.S. or clinical practice you can join a college as staff or you can go for diploma courses conducted by indira gandhi national open school. for that you have to give entrance exam.after BDS.they provide diploma( certificate course-approved by DCI) in endodontics and oral implantology or in karnataka state also providing diploma courses in dentistry through entrance exams like COMEDK and KCET or you can go for job in clinical research.you have to take admission in clinicAL RESEARCH institute.you can also go for MBA and can join any dental company as representative.you can also do Msc in dental materials provided by manipal university.

Best options after BDS except for MDS and clinical practice
its Depends on your interests. Many people are doing MBA these days, there are many specialisations there too, like pharma or hosp admin etc for health professionals.
You can attempt IAS, IPS etc, if you feel inclined.
There is PhD if you are interested in research. You can do Dental Materials, or anything else. NCBS & IISc both at Bangalore are good institutes. There is something like this in AIIMS& Manipal also.
Actually, there are so many options in the big, big world. Everything depends on what YOU want to do. The key here is, never do anything that you dont enjoy.

    All the best

Go in for Clinical Practice, thats the best option. Alternatively you can go for Clinical Research or MBA...That depends more on what profession you are looking at, whether you are looking at a future in dentistry itself or switching fields.

Re: Best options after BDS except for MDS and clinical practice?

    hii...dear...

as usually...MDS and clinical research are two evergreen couses for an bds graduate...
but don't be worried.....i will try to show you the correct way as..
Clinical research is a branch of Medical science that determines the safety and effectiveness of Medications,Devices,Diagnostic products and treatment regimens intended for human use. These may be used for prevention, treatment,
diagnosis or for relieving symptoms of a disease.
The Clinical Research industry in India has grown from Rs 20 crores to Rs 100 crores in the last three years.
it is expected to touch Rs 5,000 crores by the end of 2010.
Due to the amount of work increasing in clinical research, There is a vast requirement for qualified and competent professional in Clinical research.

Another option is career in Healthcare management.
This course is recently introduced in India.
Healthcare management is the field relating to leadership, management, and administration of hospitals, hospital networks, and health care systems.

The growth of the hospitals in a single city shows the demand and supply of trained healthcare staff.Hospitals today have become state-of-the-art healthcare facilities providers. Therefore, they need highly skilled and trained healthcare management professionals.

As far as growth opportunities of healthcare professionals are concerned, a hospital administrator can rise upto the ladder to be a CEO or the head of the department. If ambitious, one can establish one's own hospital over time with extended experience gained throughout his/her career. Now a days Most of the medical students are going for obtaining a healthcare management degree and about 50% of the students are doctors.

A wide range of career opportunities exist in the filed of dentistry.

Dental departments in hospitals, dental clinics and nursing homes need the services of dentists.

Apart from this the Forensic Departments also need good dentists who are involved in identification of deceased persons

Pharmaceuticals and other companies, which produce dental and oral care products, require dentists for research and advisory works.

One can also take up work as a Dental Hygienist, Dental assistant or as a Dental consultant to models and film artists.

Self-employment is also a lucrative avenue and one can become a private practitioner.

For those with an adventurous kind of personality one can also join the Army Dental Corps.

The Armed forces also recruit dentists directly.

Recruitment to a government job is through UPSC and Staff Selection Commission for states.

    Good Luck . . .
